The thing is, though, once you get to know someone well enough, it's easier to sense their tone through their messages and emails. If your emoji-heavy friend replies “K” to something you wrote, you can safely assume they're unhappy with you!
But all of this is in regards to tone in personal relationships. Friendships, familial relationships, and even dating. But in the workplace, you can't go around tone-policing unless you're really certain that you won't be opening a huge can of worms with HR. And in general, assuming that your colleagues have good intentions is a good strategy to implement in life.
